Parkinson Risk Rises with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Drops with Early Treatment

27 Nov 2025 • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was associated with increased long-term Parkinson disease risk, new study found.

Individuals with OSA showed 1.61 excess Parkinson cases per 1,000 at six years versus unaffected peers, independent of vascular and psychiatric comorbidities or medications. The risk was more pronounced in women. Early initiation of positive airway pressure therapy substantially reduced Parkinson incidence compared with untreated veterans, reinforcing that timely OSA diagnosis and management may provide neuroprotective benefit beyond established cardiometabolic gains.
