Chronic Kidney Disease on the Rise in India: 13.24% of Adults Affected, New Report Reveals
9 Jan 2025 • India accounts for 33% of global chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases, with the prevalence rising in both developed and developing countries.
A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted, analyzing 7,062 records and 18 studies to estimate the incidence of CKD in India from 2011 to 2023.
Key Findings
- The pooled prevalence of CKD in India was found to be 13.24%. The condition was slightly more common in men (14.80%) compared to women (13.51%).
- The southern region of India exhibited a slightly higher prevalence of 14.78%, while rural areas reported significantly higher rates (15.34%) compared to urban areas (10.65%).
- The study also projected that future CKD prevalence in India would likely range between 2.6% and 30.1%.
Early detection and preventive strategies, particularly in high-prevalence and underserved areas, are essential for effectively reducing the burden of CKD in India.
