Hepatic Cirrhosis Heightens Risk of Osteoporosis and Fractures
26 Feb 2025 • A systematic review involving 76,521 cirrhotic patients and 695,330 controls reveals that hepatic cirrhosis patients face significantly increased risks of osteoporosis, fractures, and reduced bone mineral density.
Key Findings:
- Cirrhotic patients were nearly twice as likely to develop osteoporosis (OR = 1.93) and had a 2.3-fold higher likelihood of fractures (OR = 2.30).
- Bone mineral density reductions were observed at the lumbar spine (SMD = -0.57) and femoral neck (SMD = -0.41).
These findings underscore the critical need for bone health screening and preventive care in cirrhotic patients.
