Persistent Proteinuria Heightens VTE Risk, but Improvement Significantly Reduces It

1 Dec 2025 • Lowering proteinuria levels may help protect against venous thromboembolism (VTE).

In a national cohort of more than 1.7 million adults followed for 14.5 years, nearly 46,000 developed VTE, and risk increased with worsening proteinuria. Those with persistent or progressed abnormalities had higher risk (HR 1.88 and 1.31, respectively) compared with individuals with normal proteinuria. Importantly, individuals whose proteinuria improved still showed elevated risk (HR 1.18), yet had significantly lower odds of VTE than those with persistent disease (HR 0.69).

These findings suggest that monitoring and reducing proteinuria over time could meaningfully lower thrombotic risk.
