Rethinking Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography Utilization in Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosis
28 Feb 2025 • A recent clinical audit highlights the overuse of Computed Tomography Pulmonary Angiography (CTPA) in diagnosing suspected pulmonary embolism (PE), with only 14.6% of scans confirming PE.
The analysis revealed that nearly 47% of patients under 50 with a zero PERC score and patients over 50 with normal age-adjusted D-dimer levels underwent unnecessary CTPA scans, all with negative results.
This suggests a need for better adherence to risk assessment tools like PERC and D-dimer thresholds to reduce unnecessary scans, minimize radiation exposure, and optimize healthcare resources.
