Low LDL Cholesterol Levels Are Associated with Reduced Risk of Dementia
2 Apr 2025 • Among 108,980 matched patients, those with LDL-C below 70 mg/dL (1.8 mmol/L) had a 26% lower risk of all-cause dementia and a 28% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease-related dementia (ADRD) compared to those with LDL-C above 130 mg/dL (3.4 mmol/L).
Even at LDL-C levels below 55 mg/dL, dementia risk remained 18% lower. Statin therapy further reduced dementia risk by 13% for all-cause dementia and 12% for ADRD.
These findings highlight the potential of lipid management as a preventive strategy against cognitive decline, reinforcing the role of statins in dementia risk reduction.
