Elevated Fibrinogen Levels Could Predict Diabetic Foot Ulcer Severity
25 Mar 2025 • Elevated fibrinogen levels strongly correlate with the severity of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), a study found.
Key Findings:
- Of the participants, 30.11% had severe ulcers (Wagner Grade 5), and 56.99% showed critical ischemia.
- Fibrinogen levels rose with increasing ulcer severity, reaching a peak of 720.77 mg/dL for grade 5 ulcers.
- Higher fibrinogen levels were linked to deeper ulcers and more significant vascular impairment, such as non-palpable pedal pulses and severe peripheral arterial disease.
- Fibrinogen levels were also associated with C-reactive protein and comorbidities like hypertension and chronic kidney disease.
These findings suggest that fibrinogen could be a useful biomarker for predicting DFU progression and guiding treatment strategies.
