Gut–Eye Axis in Focus: Dry Eye More Common After Gastrectomy
9 Dec 2025 • Patients undergoing gastric surgery may face a higher risk of long-term dry eye disease, new data suggests.
Tracking more than 2,300 gastrectomy patients, researchers observed a 9% higher risk of developing dry eye compared with matched controls (HR 1.09). The risk was more pronounced after total gastrectomy (HR 1.40). In contrast, colectomy showed no elevated risk (HR 1.00) among over 3,000 patients studied.
The findings highlight that dry eye may be an underrecognized consequence of gastric surgery and recommend proactive symptom assessment and follow-up, particularly in those undergoing total gastrectomy.
