Bariatric Surgery Cuts Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Risk in Obese Patients
28 Feb 2025 • Bariatric surgery reduces the incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in obese patients, a study revealed.
In 6,124 patients, CTS incidence dropped from 8.4% pre-surgery to 5.1% post-surgery, with a dose-response relationship: greater weight loss following BS was linked to a greater reduction in CTS risk.
Older patients with higher BMI and comorbidities like hypertension and diabetes were more likely to develop CTS post-surgery. Importantly, weight regain did not impact CTS incidence, highlighting the protective effect of BS.
