Chronic Kidney Disease Linked to Cerebral Small Vessel Disease in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients
24 Apr 2025 • A study has uncovered a significant association between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
Among 3,909 stroke patients, 7.9% had CKD, which was strongly linked to key markers of CSVD, including white matter hyperintensities (OR 1.84), lacunar infarctions (OR 3.46), and cerebral microbleeds (OR 2.51).
These findings suggest that CKD may be an underrecognized yet modifiable contributor to cerebrovascular injury, underscoring the need for integrated brain–kidney risk assessment in stroke care.
