Myocardial Infarction and Stroke Rates Surge Following Bloodstream Infections
26 Mar 2025 • A large study has revealed a striking link between BSI and CVD events.
Key Findings:
- Researchers found that within the first week of infection, the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) surged nearly ten-fold (IRR: 9.67), while stroke risk followed a similar pattern.
- The risk remained elevated for up to two weeks before returning to baseline after 28 days.
Patients with severe inflammation—marked by C-reactive protein (CRP) levels exceeding 300 mg/L—faced an even greater threat, with MI risk increasing over 21-fold (IRR: 21.54) and stroke risk rising nearly seven-fold (IRR: 6.94).
