Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy: A Two-Way Risk Factor
7 Mar 2025 • There is a reciprocal causal link between glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), with intraocular pressure (IOP) as a key mediator.
Key Findings:
- The analysis found that glaucoma increases the risk of DR (OR = 1.080), while higher IOP also raises DR susceptibility (OR = 1.100).
- Conversely, DR contributes to a heightened risk of glaucoma (OR = 1.024) and IOP elevation (OR = 1.057).
- Multivariable MR confirmed glaucoma as an independent risk factor for DR (OR = 1.069).
These findings emphasize the need for early detection and integrated management of both diseases to prevent irreversible vision loss.
