Neurological Events Surge in First Month after Dengue Infection

27 Nov 2025 • Neurological complications rose sharply in the first month after acute dengue infection.

In data from 65,207 adults with confirmed dengue versus more than 1.6 million controls, the risk of a new neurological event within 30 days was nearly ten-fold higher (adjusted OR 9.69). Memory impairment (aOR 3.19) and movement disorders (aOR 7.10) were notably increased, while broader symptoms including encephalopathy and fatigue showed the strongest link (aOR 14.32). Although the absolute excess burden remained low—under one extra case per 100 dengue infections—older adults and periods dominated by dengue serotype 3 showed greater vulnerability.

Findings stressed the need for close neurological surveillance in post-dengue recovery, particularly among higher-risk patients.
