ASD Tied to Higher Neurologic and Orbital Complications in Pediatric Acute Sinusitis
11 Dec 2025 • Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) hospitalized for acute sinusitis faced substantially higher neurological and orbital complication rates than neurotypical peers, according to KID database analysis.
Seizures occurred in 26.4% of children with ASD versus 6.3% of controls (OR 3.52), and orbital symptoms such as eye pain were more common (4% vs 1.4%). Yet maxillary sinus surgery was performed 54% less often in the ASD group (OR 0.46). Length of stay and hospital costs were similar across groups.
The findings underscore the need for heightened neurologic monitoring and more deliberate surgical decision-making when evaluating acute sinusitis in children with ASD.
