Atopic Dermatitis Carries a Higher Burden of Non-Atopic Multimorbidity
12 Dec 2025 • Adults with atopic dermatitis (AD) carried a significantly higher burden of non-atopic chronic disease, with risk escalating alongside disease severity.
In a study of 37,193 adults (mean age 47.2 years), the odds of non-atopic multimorbidity were 1.47-fold higher in adults with AD, rising to 1.74 in moderate-to-severe cases. The burden grew steeper with increasing disease load, reaching a 2.09-fold elevation in those with five or more comorbidities. Distinct multimorbidity patterns also emerged: an orofacial cluster seen exclusively in AD and a metabolic-style profile with stronger respiratory and cardiometabolic involvement.
The findings reinforce AD as a systemic condition extending beyond the skin and highlight the need for coordinated, multidisciplinary management.
