FDA Approves First Treatment For Molluscum Contagiosum

25 Jul 2023 • FDA has approved Ycanth (cantharidin) for the topical treatment of molluscum contagiosum in adult and pediatric patients 2 years of age and older. Ycanth is the first FDA-approved treatment for molluscum. Providers apply a single application of Ycanth on the areas of patients’ skin with molluscum bumps every 3 weeks as needed.

The approval was based on successful results from two phase 3 trials (CAMP-1 and CAMP-2) that evaluated Ycanth's safety and efficacy compared to a placebo in young patients with molluscum contagiosum. The trials showed that Ycanth achieved higher rates of complete clearance of treatable molluscum lesions compared to the placebo group.

Although 97% of patients experienced local skin reactions during application, adverse events were generally mild to moderate, and no serious adverse events were reported. Only a small percentage of patients discontinued treatment due to adverse events.
