Bariatric Surgery's Benefits Diminish for Seniors: Study Reveals
14 Aug 2024 • In adults who underwent bariatric surgery at age 60 or older, the benefits of the procedure in reducing obesity-related cancer and cardiovascular disease were not as pronounced as compared to younger individuals.
In older patients, bariatric surgery did significantly reduce the risk of obesity-related cancer or cardiovascular disease compared to nonoperative treatments.
However, gastric bypass surgery showed some benefit, reducing the risk of obesity-related cancer and cardiovascular events compared to nonoperative treatments.
These findings suggest that while bariatric surgery may offer limited preventative benefits for older individuals, gastric bypass could still provide advantages.
