How Potassium Consumption Affects Cardiovascular Outcomes in Diabetes
23 Dec 2024 • Potassium intake could serve as an effective strategy for reducing cardiovascular risk in type 2 diabetes, suggests a new study.
A study of over 3,000 individuals with type 2 diabetes reported that higher potassium intake was linked to a 34% lower risk of major cardiovascular events (MACE), such as MI, stroke & cardiovascular death.
Over 8.2 years, participants in the highest potassium intake tertile had a 34% reduced risk of MACE compared to those in the lowest tertile, even after adjusting for cardio-renal risk factors. This association was stronger in those with normal to moderately elevated albuminuria.
