Gestational Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus: Early Warning Signs for Paternal Diabetes Risk
19 Dec 2025 • A massive study of 415,730 couples suggests that pregnancy complications are a shared metabolic warning.
Researchers found that fathers whose partners experienced GDM in one pregnancy had a 22% higher diabetes risk (HR 1.22), which increased to 49% when GDM occurred in both pregnancies (HR 1.49). Gestational hypertension showed a similar pattern, raising paternal diabetes risk by 17% after one affected pregnancy (HR 1.17) and 19% after two (HR 1.19).
This risk nearly doubled when both GDM and gestational hypertension were present across both pregnancies (HR 1.94), highlighting a critical opportunity for clinician-led family intervention.
