CAD Doubles Long-Term Mortality Risk in Heart Failure Patients
18 Apr 2025 • A large study tracking over 3,200 patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) who underwent coronary angiography reveals that coexisting coronary artery disease (CAD) significantly worsens long-term outcomes.
Key Findings:
- Patients with HFrEF and CAD faced a 10-year mortality rate of 55%, compared to 33% in those without CAD (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 1.38).
- Mortality risk scaled with the extent of CAD.
- When compared to an age- and sex-matched general population, excess 10-year mortality was 29% for HFrEF patients with CAD (aHR 2.18) and 15% for those without CAD (aHR 1.87).
