Vaginal Preparation Cuts Postoperative Infection Risk after Emergency Cesarean Delivery
15 Dec 2025 • Preoperative vaginal preparation significantly reduced postoperative infections in women undergoing emergency cesarean delivery, a meta-analysis revealed.
Across 12 trials involving 5,055 women, vaginal preparation was associated with a 51% lower risk of post-cesarean endometritis (RR 0.49) and a 54% reduction in suspected neonatal sepsis (RR 0.46) compared with no preparation. Data also showed declines in endometritis and postoperative fever among treated women.
The findings support routine vaginal preparation as a simple, effective strategy to lower maternal infectious morbidity and improve neonatal outcomes during emergency cesarean sections.
