No Longevity Benefit Found with Regular Multivitamin Use in Healthy Adults Without Major Chronic Diseases
27 Jun 2024 • A cohort study of US adults found that multivitamin use was not linked to a lower risk of mortality. However, many adults still reported using multivitamins to improve their health.

The study aimed to estimate the association between multivitamin use and mortality risk, taking into account confounding factors such as healthy lifestyle and reverse causation. The study analyzed data from three prospective cohort studies in the US involving 390,124 participants (median age - 61.5 years and 55.4% male), with up to 27 years of follow-up. 164,762 deaths occurred during the follow-up period.

Among daily multivitamin users, a higher proportion were female (49.3%) and college-educated (42.0%) compared to non-users (39.3% and 37.9%, respectively). Only 11% of daily multivitamin users were current smokers (11.0%) compared to non-users (13.0%). Daily multivitamin use was not associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in either the first (hazard ratio [HR] 1.04) or second halves of follow-up (HR 1.04).
