Measles Resurgence in Europe: Cases Double in 2024, WHO Warns of Urgent Action Needed
17 Mar 2025 • Measles is surging in Europe, with 127,350 cases in 2024—twice the 2023 count and the highest since 1997, per WHO and UNICEF.
Children under five make up over 40% of cases, and more than half of patients needed hospitalization. 38 deaths have been confirmed. Romania (30,692 cases) and Kazakhstan (28,147 cases) are the worst hit.
Experts blame declining vaccination rates, worsened by COVID-19 disruptions. WHO urges stronger surveillance, immunization drives, and efforts to combat vaccine hesitancy.
