Staying Active Protects Against Alzheimer’s, Even With High Genetic Risk
5 Dec 2025 • Higher daily movement nearly halved Alzheimer’s risk in a large UK Biobank cohort.
Among 93,000 adults followed for nearly 15.5 years, those with greater accelerometer-tracked activity showed a 48% lower risk of Alzheimer’s (HR 0.52). High genetic susceptibility almost doubled risk (HR 2.42), yet physical activity delivered similar protection across all polygenic risk categories, including APOE ε4 carriers. Even light-intensity activity around the threshold of 21.7 mg was beneficial.
Findings underscore exercise as a powerful, universally protective prevention strategy, regardless of genetic profile.
