Extended Peripheral IV Catheter Use Increases Bloodstream Infection Risk

25 Apr 2025 • A large study uncovered a sharp rise in bloodstream infections (BSIs) after just 3 days of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) use.

Analyzing 371,061 PIVCs, researchers found the risk was minimal in the first 2 days but increased by day 3 (aOR 13.55).

The risk escalated further with extended use, showing an 8.53-fold increase in risk after 4 days, 5.38-fold after 5 days, and 7.63-fold after 6 days, underscoring the importance of reassessing catheter use beyond 72 hours.
