Aspirin is a highly successful antiplatelet drug & still retains its status as the 'front-line' antiplatelet drug; however, any effective antiplatelet dose of aspirin is associated with an increased risk of bleeding. Hence increased understanding of platelet biology has led to the development of new antiplatelet drugs that are potentially more effective. Aspirin and P2Y12 inhibitors (clopidogrel, prasugrel and ticagrelor) are the most commonly used antiplatelet drugs, either alone or as dual antiplatelet therapy.
