Atrial Fibrillation Triples the Risk of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Healthy Young Adults
20 Jul 2024 • A comprehensive analysis of over 6 million young adults found that atrial fibrillation (AF) triples the risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
-
The analysis, spanning 9.4 years on average, revealed that individuals with AF, making up just 0.09% of the cohort, faced a staggering threefold increase in SCA risk. They experienced SCA at a rate of 0.56 events per 1,000 person-years, compared to their peers without AF. Even after adjusting for age, sex, lifestyle factors, and medical conditions, the heightened risk persisted (adjusted hazard ratio 2.96) across both new and existing cases of AF.
-
These findings underscore the urgent need for early detection and proactive management of AF in the young adult population.
