Postpartum Weight Loss Crucial in Reducing Readmissions for Hypertensive Mothers
1 Jul 2024 • Individuals not losing weight postpartum had higher readmission rates (14.1%) compared to those with moderate (5.8%) or substantial (4.5%) weight loss. Failure to lose weight in the early postpartum period correlated with a steeper increase in systolic blood pressure during the first 2 weeks after delivery.

The retrospective study involved 1365 individuals with a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy. The researchers measured the percentage of weight change within 10 days after delivery and analyzed the likelihood of hospital readmission within 8 weeks postpartum.

The odds of readmission were significantly higher in non-weight-losing groups (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] ranging from 3.9 to 7.8), especially for readmissions related to hypertension or heart failure. Blood pressure trajectories also differed significantly among weight change groups.
