Iron Supplementation Shows No Psychomotor Development Benefit in Breastfed Infants
14 May 2024 • Is psychomotor development of exclusively or predominantly breastfed infants improved by low-dose iron supplementation between age 4 and 9 months?
Results from a recent study published in JAMA revealed that daily iron supplementation (1 mg/kg) did not improve psychomotor development, cognitive or language scores at 12, 24, and 36 months. Additionally, the intervention showed no significant reduction in the risk of iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia at 12 months.
Iron supplementation was not effective in optimizing psychomotor development in healthy breastfed infants born at term with normal birth weight in a setting of low rates of anemia.
