Reassessing Antibiotic Strategies in Aspiration Pneumonia: Limited Anaerobic Coverage Sufficient?

22 Feb 2024 • Extended anaerobic coverage is likely unnecessary in aspiration pneumonia because it is associated with no additional mortality benefit, only an increased risk of C. difficile colitis - as per findings published in the journal CHEST.

  • Categorizing patients with aspiration pneumonia into limited anaerobic antibiotic coverage (LAC) and extended anaerobic antibiotic coverage (EAC) groups, a study found no significant difference in in-hospital mortality rates between the two groups but noted an increased risk of C. difficile colitis with EAC.
  • EAC offered no additional mortality benefit and a 1.0% elevated risk of C. difficile colitis compared to LAC.
