Osteoarthritis Doubles the Risk of Kidney Disease, Especially in Women
29 Jul 2024 • A 10-year NHANES study reveals a strong link between osteoarthritis (OA) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), showing OA patients are over twice as likely to have CKD compared to those without OA.
-
The study found 26.69% of OA patients had CKD, versus 13.83% of non-OA patients. Logistic regression revealed an odds ratio (OR) of 2.269, indicating a significant association that persisted even after adjusting for common risk factors like age, sex, physical activity, socioeconomic factors, obesity, previous smoking status, alcohol consumption, hypertension, and diabetes.
-
Gender-specific results showed men with OA had a lower CKD risk (OR: 0.869), while women faced a higher risk (OR: 1.178).
This highlights the need for OA patients to monitor kidney health closely.
