Folic Acid-Fortified Iodized Salt Successfully Boosts Folate Levels in Reproductive Women of India
11 Mar 2024 • Use of folic acid–fortified iodized salt was associated with increased serum folate concentrations in women of reproductive age.
- In a novel trial conducted in rural India, nonpregnant nonlactating women aged 20 to 44 years consumed 300 µg/d of folic acid via folic acid–fortified iodized salt i.e double fortified salt.
- As a result, their median serum folate concentration significantly increased from 14.6 nmol/L at baseline to 54.4 nmol/L, marking a 3.7-fold rise.
- This evidence supports the potential of fortified salt in preventing folate deficiency & associated birth defects, especially spina bifida & anencephaly.
