Rheumatic Diseases Show Significant Impact on Reproductive Health: Insights from a Nationwide Study
20 Mar 2024 • Rheumatic diseases have a broad impact on reproductive health, with effects comparable with that of several other immune-mediated diseases (IMDs).
- A recent nationwide Finnish study found that rheumatic diseases like SLE, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and seropositive RA were linked to higher rates of childlessness and reduced fertility.
- Additionally, IMDs such as SLE, Sjögren's syndrome, type 1 diabetes & Addison’s disease showed more than double the risk for adverse perinatal outcomes like pre-eclampsia, preterm delivery & small-for-gestational-age newborns.
- Of the rheumatic diseases, SLE and SS conferred the largest risk increases on perinatal adverse event outcomes.
