Amino Acid Infusion Slashes AKI Risk in Cardiac Surgery Patients
14 Jun 2024 • A recent study of 3500 participants found that amino acid infusion in cardiac surgery patients reduced acute kidney injury (AKI).
-
A multinational trial randomly assigned adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery to receive either an amino acid infusion (2g/kg body weight per day) or a placebo. The primary outcome measured was the occurrence of AKI. Secondary outcomes included the severity of AKI, kidney-replacement therapy use, duration, and 30-day mortality.
-
The study found that AKI occurred less frequently in the amino acid group (26.9%) compared to the placebo group (31.7%). There were no significant differences in other outcomes or adverse events.
