Weak Bones Spell Doom for Stroke Patients? Bone Density Emerges as Key Factor in Stroke Survival
27 May 2024 • Low BMD, particularly in the femur and spine, is a significant predictor of mortality and UTI in stroke patients, claimed a new study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Analyzing data from 905 individuals, predominantly elderly females, the study revealed alarming rates of osteopenia and osteoporosis among stroke patients.
- Findings suggest that patients with lower BMD in the spine and right femur, especially below 0.842 g/cm2 (spine) and 0.624 g/cm2 (right femur), have reduced survival rates.
- Additionally, lower spine BMD was also significantly associated with an increased risk of urinary tract infection (UTI).
These findings underscore the urgent need for proactive assessment and management of BMD in stroke care to optimize patient outcomes and stave off complications.
