Round-the-Clock Oxygen No Better Than 15 Hours for Severe Hypoxemia, Study Finds
13 Sept 2024 • Among patients with chronic severe hypoxemia, long-term oxygen therapy used for 24 hours per day did not result in a lower risk of hospitalization or death within 1 year than therapy for 15 hours per day.
Over the course of a year, no significant difference was found in the risk of hospitalization or death between the two groups, with both reporting similar event rates (124.7 vs. 124.5 events per 100 person-years). Secondary outcomes, including adverse events, also showed no meaningful differences.
These findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggest the more burdensome 24-hour regimen offers no added survival benefit over the 15-hour treatment.
