First-Ever Indian Guidelines for Dyslipidemia Management
10 Jul 2024 • The Cardiological Society of India (CSI) has issued guidelines for managing dyslipidemia in India, targeting clinicians, individuals, and medical laboratories.
-
Recommendations include maintaining LDL-C levels below 100 mg/dL and non-HDL-C below 130 mg/dL for the general population and low-risk individuals.
-
High-risk patients (diabetes or hypertension) should aim for LDL-C < 70 mg/dL and non-HDL-C < 100 mg/dL, while very high-risk individuals should target LDL-C < 55 mg/dL and non-HDL-C < 85 mg/dL.
-
Non-fasting lipid measurements are endorsed for risk assessment and treatment. Targeting LDL-C is crucial but in individuals with high triglycerides (>150 mg/dL), non-HDL cholesterol level is the target.
-
The guidelines emphasize early lipid profiling from age 18 for those with a familial history of heart disease or hypercholesterolemia.
-
Regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (150 minutes/week) is recommended. Dietary changes including less sugar and carbohydrate intake and lifestyle modifications need to be focused.
-
Standardization of lipid testing in medical laboratories nationwide is urgently advocated.
