Preoperative Thyroid Hormone Replacement Tied to Higher Complications in Major Abdominal Surgery
24 Jan 2024 • Individuals on preoperative thyroid replacement prior to major abdominal surgery faced a 1.5-fold increased risk of serious morbidity and a 1.7-fold greater risk of serious sepsis.
Furthermore, patients with pre-existing hypothyroidism on thyroid replacement therapy also correlated with longer hospital stays & were more likely to undergo open surgery rather than minimally invasive procedures.
Patients with pre-existing hypothyroidism have significantly increased morbidity and length of stay. The findings suggest a need for perioperative optimization and risk stratification based on thyroid replacement, emphasizing potential opportunities to improve outcomes in major abdominal surgeries.
