Sleepless Nights Spike Diabetes Risk, Large Study Reveals
19 Jul 2024 • A UK Biobank study of 84,421 participants has revealed a strong connection between irregular sleep duration and a higher risk of developing diabetes.
- Over seven years, those with sleep duration variability exceeding 30 minutes had a higher chance of developing diabetes, with a 59% higher risk for those with variability of 91 minutes or more.
- This association was particularly strong among individuals with a lower diabetes polygenic risk score and longer sleep durations.
- Adjustments for lifestyle and other factors reduced, but did not eliminate, this association.
