ACE Inhibitors and ARBs Lower Poststroke Epilepsy Risk in Hypertensive Patients
28 Aug 2024 • Hypertensive patients who continue using angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) after an ischemic stroke have a significantly lower risk of developing poststroke epilepsy (PSE).
- Analyzing data from over 220,000 patients, researchers found that nonusers of ACEIs/ARBs had a 72% higher risk of PSE.
- Discontinued ACEI/ARB users faced the highest risk, with an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 2.34.
As per findings published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, this protective effect was particularly pronounced in younger patients, emphasizing the importance of ongoing ACEI/ARB therapy after stroke to mitigate PSE risk.
