Single test to diagnose TB & MDR-TB launched in India

22 Feb 2023 • The Noida-based firm launches the BD MAX MDR TB test, which is run on the BD MAX molecular diagnostic system, making it possible for physicians to quickly screen for tuberculosis (TB) and multidrug resistance as a first-line test. Currently, two distinct tests must be performed: one to check for TB and the other to look for drug resistance - but only to one drug (Rifampicin). With the help of this novel test, drug resistance to both isoniazid and rifampicin can be detected. The test enables physicians to detect if the bacteria that cause tuberculosis (TB) have mutations linked to resistance to two crucial first-line medications, isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RIF), respectively. This improves the information available to choose the best course of treatment for patients and eliminates the requirement for a separate test for the detection of isoniazid (INH). According to a company spokesperson, this new test represents a significant advance for clinical practice because antimicrobial resistance has complicated the diagnosis process. The BD MAX MDR-TB panel, which combines MTB, RIF, and INH in less than 4 hours, addresses this complexity.
