Severe COPD Exacerbations Raise Risks for Future Myocardial Infarction and Pulmonary Embolism
1 Aug 2024 • New research confirms that frequent and severe acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPDs) significantly heighten the long-term risk of both myocardial infarction (MI) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Patients with one moderate exacerbation had a 10% higher risk of MI and a 33% higher risk of PE, while those with two or more severe exacerbations faced an 82% increased risk of MI and a 162% increased risk of PE.
The risk was most pronounced within the first year of follow-up. This underscores the importance of managing AECOPDs to mitigate long-term cardiovascular risks.
