Why Older Women with Type 2 Diabetes Face Higher Fracture Risk: The Role of Physical Function
7 Aug 2024 • Despite having higher bone mineral density, better bone microarchitecture, and similar bone material strength compared to non-diabetic peers, women with T2D demonstrated significantly impaired physical function.
Women with T2D exhibited no significant difference in bone material strength compared to those without, but showed poorer physical function, including reduced grip strength and slower gait speed.
This impaired physical function, rather than skeletal characteristics, appears to be the primary factor driving the elevated fracture risk in older women with T2D.
