Optimal Implementation of Guideline-Directed Medical Therapy in Heart Failure Could Prevent 1.19 Million Deaths Per Year!
4 Oct 2024 • Globally, an estimated 1.19 million heart failure deaths per year could be prevented with optimization of GDMT, reported a new study.
The quadruple therapy, which includes β-blockers, angiotensin receptor–neprilysin inhibitors, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, and SGLT-2 inhibitors, was found to be underused globally, with significant treatment gaps particularly in Southeast Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Africa.
Improvement in use of GDMT could result in substantial mortality benefits on a global scale. Even partial improvements in GDMT use could substantially reduce mortality, underscoring the need for global efforts to increase treatment access and address disparities.
