Measles Cases Soar to 10.3 Million in 2023: WHO Highlights Global Vaccination Crisis

15 Nov 2024 • Measles cases surged globally to 10.3 million in 2023, marking a 20% increase from the previous year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC.

This rise in infections is attributed to inadequate immunization coverage, with over 22 million children missing their first dose of the vaccine.

While 83% of children received their first dose, only 74% received the second, falling short of the 95% threshold needed for herd immunity.

The African region saw nearly half of all major outbreaks, with 57 countries reporting large or disruptive cases. As a result, 107,500 deaths, primarily among children under five, were recorded, despite a slight reduction in mortality rates.

Measles complications, such as blindness, pneumonia, and brain swelling, remain a serious risk for survivors.

WHO emphasizes the urgent need for high-quality immunization programs and robust disease surveillance to curb this global health threat. Without adequate vaccination efforts, the goal of measles elimination by 2030 is at risk.
