Delhi Reports First Japanese Encephalitis Case In 13 Years

28 Nov 2024 • Delhi has reported a single case of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in a 72-year-old man from Uttam Nagar, West Delhi.

The patient, who was diabetic with a history of coronary artery disease, tested positive for JE on November 6, 2024, after being admitted to AIIMS on November 3.

Despite this, health officials confirmed there is no outbreak in the city, noting that most JE cases in Delhi originate from neighboring states.

Public health measures, including those from the National Centre for Vector-Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC), have been implemented.

Nationwide, 1,548 JE cases have been reported in 2024, with Assam having the highest incidence.

Officials highlighted the importance of vaccination and preventive measures like using mosquito nets and repellents to reduce the risk. JE remains a concern in high-burden states, though the disease does not spread through human-to-human contact.
