Vision Loss May Contribute to Nearly 1 in 5 Dementia Cases, Study Shows
6 Sept 2024 • Up to 19% of dementia cases in the US could be linked to vision impairments, found a study recently published in JAMA Ophthalmology.
The study, which included 2,767 adults aged 65 and older, found that contrast sensitivity impairment had the strongest association with dementia, contributing 15%, followed by near visual acuity (9.7%) and distance acuity (4.9%). The impact was most pronounced in individuals aged 71 to 79 and in females.
The findings suggest a crucial role for comprehensive vision screening in mitigating dementia risk in seniors.
