High ICS Doses Linked to Significant S. maltophilia Risk in COPD Patients

11 Mar 2024 • Researchers in Denmark identified a dose–response relationship between increasing doses of inhaled corticosteroids and the hazard for Stenotrophomonas maltophilia in the lower respiratory tract in COPD outpatients.

Hazard ratios (HR) surged with increasing ICS doses: low ICS dose (HR 2.6), moderate ICS dose (HR 3.0), & high ICS dose (HR 5.7). High-dose ICS users faced an almost sixfold increased hazard vs. non-users.

This study underlines the importance of continuous monitoring treatment and treatment response in patients with COPD, and when possible, step down or stop inhaled corticosteroid treatment.
