Fourth Case of Fatal Amoebic Meningoencephalitis Reported in Kerala

8 Jul 2024 • In Kozhikode, Kerala, a 14-year-old boy has become the fourth reported case of rare and fatal amoebic meningoencephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the brain-eating amoeba. Tragically, this organism has claimed the lives of three other minors in the state over the past two months.

The affected boy was admitted to the hospital a week ago, and there has been encouraging news of improvement since he began treatment. Responding swiftly to this alarming situation, a high-level meeting convened by the state's Chief Minister has issued crucial advice.

To prevent further infections, residents are urged to avoid contact with unclean waterbodies. It is emphasized to maintain cleanliness in all waterbodies and ensure swimming pools are adequately chlorinated.
