Weight-Loss Key to Lower Kidney Disease Risk in Overweight/Obese T2DM Patients

12 Dec 2023 • In a study involving 3,601 individuals with overweight/obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and spanning over 8 years, researchers discovered a significant link between body weight time in target range (TTR) and kidney outcomes.

A higher body weight time in the target range with a weight-loss target of losing ≥7% of initial weight significantly reduced the risk of adverse kidney outcomes in individuals with both overweight/obesity & T2DM.

Maintaining weight within a weight-loss target during the initial 4 years had a lower risk of composite kidney outcomes, i.e a decline in eGFR ≥30% from baseline or progression to end-stage kidney disease.
